Searching Tips and Information
Basic Titles Search:
Most searches can be done in the Basic Titles Search mode.
Please note that our library software automatically stems
most common plural and singular forms of words (a search
on cat will also return results containing the word cats,
and a search on cats will return results containing the
word cat.)
- Title Search: Use when you know one or some of
the words of a title.
- Keyword Search: Searches in the titles/series titles/publisher/subject/and
summary fields.
- Subject: Searches subject heading field. When you
go to the records in title display, you can click on the
underlined subject heading to find other material catalogued
with that subject heading.
Related terms will also be searched, (but not if the subject
term has a subheading). (Note: J.W.Crane Memorial Library
uses National Library of Medicine MeSH headings).
- Material Type Restriction: You can restrict your
searches to one or more kind of item (including videos,
journals, games) by choosing one or more of the materials
in the drop down box. NOTE: If you are looking for videos,
choose VIDEOS and KITS from the drop down menu).
Advanced Searching:
The Advanced Search Menu allows you to construct searches
using a variety of access points. These include:
- Publication Type: Choose Publication Type from the Access
Point Menu. HINT: You can type the first letter of the type
of access point and it will automatically be filled in or
choose from a list of publication types.
- Year of Publication Range: To find items published in
a specific year, or a range of years. Enter the four digit
year (ex. 1996) or a range of years (ex. 1998-2001).
- Geographic Location: If you want to find Canadian materials,
you must choose all the Canadian provinces listed (if you
select all provinces from the drop down menu, they will
all be searched).
- Access Points: Some of the Access Points require that
you enter text in the Search Parameter box. Others require
that you select your parameter from a drop down menu. For
these, a FIND box will pop up when you click on the Access
Point. Click on the Find box to choose your search parameters.
- To construct searches using multiple access points, use
Boolean Logic in the Logic Statement Box (at the top of
the screen).
- For help on using the Advanced Search Mode, click on the
Help button on the left side of the screen.
NOTE: To look for Internet resources:
- To look for Internet resources, choose Location: Internet.
This includes web sites, web resources, and PDF files. To
search for specific types of Internet resources, you may
also choose electronic journal, electronic resource, or
web-site from Access Point "Publication type".
- In display, you can click on the underlined link to launch
the web site.
