Health Services
Deer Lodge Centre provides a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient services for residents, patients, family members and the community.
Day Hospital
The Day Hospital program provides assessment and rehabilitation services to promote healthy living for seniors in the community and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. Based on their needs, clients admitted to the program attend 1- 2 times per week and are discharged after rehabilitation is completed. An assessment team determines appropriate goals and treatment with the client. Clients usually have more than one problem and are treated by an interdisciplinary team.
The Respiratory Care program in the Day Hospital helps frail, elderly clients in the community who have chronic lung disease. The program includes assessment, rehabilitation and education
(see Respiratory
Services).
The Get-Away Club is a day program for persons with a moderate level of cognitive impairment. Services include structured daily activities for clients, respite for caregivers, counselling and support to caregivers, educational support, and client assessment at home or at the Centre.

Dental Services
The University of Manitoba Dental services are available to Deer Lodge Centre patients and residents, and the community. The cost of dental services is either paid directly by the patient or may be covered by his or her dental plan.
Diagnostic
Services
Laboratory services at Deer Lodge Centre are operated by Diagnostic Services of Manitoba (DSM). DSM is responsible for all of Manitoba's public laboratory and rural diagnostic imaging services.
As part of DSM's provincial diagnostic network, the Medical Laboratory at Deer Lodge Centre is a point of access for facility patients and residents to a comprehensive range of laboratory services for the purpose of diagnosis, pre and post operative testing and treatment monitoring.

Food
& Nutrition Services
Retail Food Services
Retail Food Services operates the Courtyard Cafe located off the Centre's Main Street area. The Cafe offers a wide variety of dining choices ranging from soups and deli sandwiches to a Daily Featured Special. Hours of operation for the Cafe are 7:00 am to 6:30 pm daily. Lunch is served from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and supper is available from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. In addition to cafeteria operation, a full range of catering services is offered. These include service for events such as meetings, luncheons, banquets, wedding or funeral receptions, birthday parties and much more.
Clinical Nutrition
Once admitted to the Centre, a Registered Dietitian will assess the nutritional needs of all residents and patients. The Dietitians work closely with other programs such as Day Hospital, Geriatric Mental Health, the Dysphagia Outpatient Clinic, and the ALS team. As active members of the Interdisciplinary Team, the Dietitians work with food service staff, patients, residents, and families to optimize nutritional care.
Hearing Centre
The Deer Lodge Hearing Centre is one of four community based hearing facilities in Winnipeg that are part of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Audiological services include the prevention, identification, assessment and (re)habilitation of hearing loss.
Services are provided to children and adults in the community as well as patients and residents of Deer Lodge Centre. Clients may self-refer for a hearing test by calling 831-2126. There is no change for services provided by the Hearing Centre.

Medical Care
Deer Lodge Centre provides 24-hour medical coverage as follows:
- A House Medical Officer is available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- An On-Call Physician is available from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
Each unit has an Attending Physician who visits weekly.
Most medical conditions can be managed at Deer Lodge Centre. If a resident becomes medically unstable, or requires intensive care or surgery, transfer to an acute care hospital will be arranged.
Nursing Care
Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Aides provide twenty-four hour nursing care.

Pharmacy
On admission, residents and patients are assigned to a staff pharmacist who works with them, their doctors and other team members to see that medications are appropriate and available. Specialized pharmacy services and expertise are available to those with complex health problems. Drug reviews and health assessments are done every 90 days to ensure, the best course of treatment.
Prosthetic
& Orthotic Services
Anderson's House Prosthetic and Orthotic, a private provider located at Deer Lodge Centre, has services available to patients, residents and the public. A physician referral or a prescription for artificial limbs, braces and/or orthopaedic shoes is required. Manitoba Health does not cover some of these services and clients may be responsible for paying for them.

Geriatric Mental Health Services
Geriatric Mental Health Services seeks to promote independence and quality of life for persons aged 65 or older experiencing cognitive and/or mental health problems. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the service provides assessment, consultation, short-term intervention, education and support to individuals, families and care providers on an outreach basis.
Recreation
Therapeutic recreation services are available to all residents
during the daytime and evenings.

Rehabilitation
Communication Disorders
Communication Disorders provides services
to adults who have difficulty with
speech, language, hearing, voice and/or
swallowing. These problems may occur
as a result of stroke, progressive
disease and/or injury. Treatment programs
by speech-language pathologists assist
the client in reaching maximum potential
for communication and swallowing.
Assistive Technology Products and Services
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority out of Deer Lodge Centre and the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB, operates Assistive Technology Products and Services (ATPS).
ATPS provides clinical assessment and consultation for adult Manitobans with disabilities who require assistive devices to enhance their independence and daily living. The multidisciplinary ATPS staff work together to coordinate services for individuals.
The ATPS components located at Deer Lodge Centre include:
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Assessment Clinic
- Assistive Technology Rental Program
These services provide adults with difficulty talking a speech-language pathology assessment to determine whether a speech generating device would be appropriate and an opportunity to trial some devices. The speech-language pathologist with the ATPS service may also work in collaboration with professionals in the community who then access the equipment available from the program.
The ATPS rental program rents both communication equipment to enhance the ability to communicate and also environmental control units to enable independence for adults with physical problems. Once the equipment has been selected and verified by either a speech-language pathologist (for communication devices) or occupational therapist (for environmental controls) a free trial period is offered. If the device is successful it may be rented from the program. The ATPS rental program located at DLC.
The ATPS services operated from the Health Sciences Centre include:
- Mechanical Modifications: the rehab mechanical specialists modify or customize everything from wheelchairs to cutlery. They will also develop or design equipment to enable independence for people when there are no commercially available solutions.
- Automotive Modifications: the automotive service is available to modify vehicles for the disabled. Modifications include, left foot gas pedal installation, hand controls and electronic modifications to enable persons with disabilities to drive.
- Power Wheelchair Control Modifications: this section of ATPS works to find solutions for people who are not able to drive their power wheelchairs with a regular joystick.
- Computer Access Clinic: The clinic assists clients with disabilities to find ways to use computers, PDAs, cell phones and other high-tech devices.

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapy Department
provides individuals with every possible
opportunity to reap the benefits of
interacting with people and things
around them. At the same time, it
aims to help them experience the satisfaction
of doing things for themselves whenever
and wherever possible. Occupational
therapists assist in these endeavours
by providing the necessary therapy,
equipment and recommendations for
home modifications to enhance the
client's independence and quality
of life.
Physiotherapy
Deer Lodge Centre provides physiotherapy
to individuals in active assessment
and rehabilitation, chronic care,
personal care, outpatients and Day
Hospital. Physiotherapy helps to improve
and maintain function.

Respiratory
Services
Respiratory Services provides all aspects of respiratory care, both diagnostic and therapeutic. Diagnostic testing could include pulmonary function tests; arterial blood gases and overnight sleep studies. Therapeutic services include both respiratory and oxygen assessments. Clinical teaching is also done for patients, residents and families in regard to both oxygen and bronchodilator therapy. A Respiratory Care program is also offered in the Day
Hospital.
Social Work
Social Work services can help individuals by
reducing stress and improving their ability
to function when they face problems that
interfere with their well-being. Assistance
may include admission and discharge planning,
help with financial and/or legal matters
and help in accessing community resources.
A social worker can support clients with
physical or emotional problems, help to
problem-solve if a crisis occurs, and
facilitate family/staff communications.

Spiritual
Care
The chaplains help patients, residents and families with their spiritual
questions. They are trained to visit people from many different
religious backgrounds and those who have no formal religious
beliefs. They are here to listen to and support patients,
residents and families. They can also help patients and residents
keep in touch with their own minister, priest or rabbi. The
Worship Centre is located in the
Life and Learning Centre on the Mezzanine level of the Tower
Building.
